Build your own power supply
Article on Instructables Power Supply: During the development of our numerous LED products, we were once again short of a laboratory power supply, so the question arose: buy or build your own: What a question, build it yourself of course
With laboratory power supplies, it seems that you simply always have 1 unit too few. When we were once again faced with this dilemma, we were about to buy a new power supply until a colleague said: “It would be fun if we could build one ourselves for our exact needs!”
The work of persuasion was obviously done with this sophisticated rhetorical masterpiece and we began with a specification sheet and subsequent research.
This also gave rise to the idea of documenting the project accordingly and making this available , including building instructions and other data.
We decided to use the do-it-yourself platform Instructables. This platform – or rather the users there – are simply amazing! The things that people put online there are simply inspiring and the constant “open in new tab” can quickly push you to the limits of your own RAM memory.
We then decided to use a 3*250W power supply with 50V/5A each (our dimmers work up to 48V, for example) with constant voltage and constant current (did you know that LEDs are correctly powered by constant current and not constant voltage? Current and not const. voltage? More on this in our LED tutorial). We used a Joy-it module for this and can also configure each channel via the USB interface and even run U/I characteristics. The last point in particular aroused our interest in automated test environments and since this lab power supply is now the favorite power supply of the entire team, we are once again one lab power supply short…
Greetings with power, the makers of Emilum
We hope you enjoy rebuilding it (also in a reduced version), you can find the article about our power supply here:
