230V-Dimmer für dekorative Leuchten

230V dimmer for light bulbs, halogen lights & LED retrofit,...

230V dimmers are ideal for dimming decorative lights! These lights are usually “classically” supplied with 230V, regardless of the light source (light bulb, halogen lamp, LED retrofit light source…). Universal dimmers are ideal for providing brilliant, pleasantly dimmed light here too. Depending on the application, this dimmer can be optimally adjusted to the light source used and reduces the brightness with either leading or trailing edge phase control, whether LED, halogen or other light sources.
The difference between leading and trailing edge phase control is that either the beginning or the end of each sine wave is cut off in order to achieve dimming. In the following, we take a closer look at both variants, list the advantages and disadvantages of leading edge phase control and trailing edge phase control and explain which variant is preferable

230V phase angle control

Halogen lights, incandescent bulbs and low-voltage lighting (with a transformer) can be dimmed perfectly with a 230V phase control. Here, the first part of each sine half-wave is cut off after the zero crossing. In other words, the bulb is disconnected from the mains at this point, and the later it is switched on, the more the bulb is dimmed.

Depending on the set dimming value, it is switched on with a time delay until the next zero crossing. Due to the rapid increase in current, the 230V phase control should not be used for capacitive loads!

Trailing edge phase control with 230V dimmer

Phase control works in exactly the opposite way. It is switched on at zero crossing and once the desired dimming level has been reached, the current flow is blocked until the next zero crossing. Phase cut-off control is mostly used with LED light bulbs, LED retrofits and filament lamps.

This form of dimming should not be used for inductive loads (e.g. transformers), as the abrupt switch-off would result in high voltage peaks.

Always observe the operating instructions for the respective product to be dimmed! It is noted there whether it is suitable for leading edge phase control or trailing edge phase control.

Dimming 230V sounds simple at first, but it isn’t always. The special features of ripple control signals and retrofit lamps are briefly explained in more detail.

Ripple control signal:
A ripple control signal from the grid operator is modulated onto the grid sine wave, which can lead to a slight energy surplus or a change in the zero crossing.
A mains filter is recommended in the event of interference.

Retrofit lamps:
Especially with retrofit lamps, there are always surprises with 230V dimmers. Why?
In simple terms, dimming in an “LED light bulb” is achieved by rectifying and measuring the mains voltage. This means that when dimming e.g. 50% duty (see above), only 50% voltage (rms) is present. An IC in the light source measures this voltage and in turn dims the LEDs, so to speak. The dimming behavior therefore varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Please never mix lamps from different manufacturers.
As this is a so-called mixed load, current peaks can occur, which in turn can place a high load on the dimmer. Therefore, the max. VA of the dimmer applies.
